Immigration Parades 3 Over Employment Scam

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday paraded three suspects who allegedly duped job seekers of more than N930,000 on the pretext of offering them employment into the service.
The Comptroller-General of the service, Mr David Parradang, paraded the suspects before newsmen in Abuja.


“We want to bring to the notice of the public that people are going about trying to trick Nigerians that are eager to get jobs.
“We have one who has been going about offering fake letters of employment to people from Edo state claiming that he would give them job at the Nigeria immigration service.
“We have two other people from Gombe that went about and collected N440, 000 from Nigerians claiming they will give them jobs in the Nigerian immigration service.
“The issue of employment in the Nigeria immigration service has been well documented there is a presidential committee that is already looking into this.
“If there is any information about recruitment it will be well publicised for everybody to know.
“I would want to say very clearly that the Nigeria Immigration Service is not recruiting now.
“So members of the public whether on Face book or anywhere don’t allow yourself to be duped by anybody; there is nothing like that; I don’t maintain any Face book account because of this.
“The service is not recruiting let nobody be deceived let nobody be duped in this respect. When the service is recruiting you will be informed properly on the procedure to take.“
Parradang said that one of the suspects had offered seven job seekers fake employment letters for N70,000 each while the other suspects collected over N440,000 from their victims.
He said that one suspect was apprehended when an applicant reported to the Edo state Command to verify the letter of employment and process necessary documentation in order to resume work.
He said that upon presenting the fake letter of employment, the applicant was interrogated and she revealed that the suspect had called informing her that the service was employing through a highly connected officer urging her to send her details by mail.
The comptroller-general said the victim assisted the service in arresting the suspect on July 8, at Lubge, Abuja, where he resided.
While answering questions from newsmen, one of the suspects revealed that during the March 15 botched NIS recruitment, an immigration officer simply known as Alhaji offered him employment if he paid N30,000.
He said that the fake appointment letters which he gave his victims was given to him by the officer adding that he was ready to assist the service arrest the said officer.
The second suspect said that he duped his victims because he was desperate for money to take care of his family.
But the third suspect who revealed that he and the second suspect were Police officers denied any involvement in the employment scam saying he was implicated in the matter by his colleague.
Parradang said the suspects would be handed over to the police for prosecution. (NAN)
