Canada 2014 FIFA U20 World Cup Most Valuable Player Asisat Oshoala has
backed the Super Falcons to reclaim the African Women’s Championship in
Namibia next month.
Oshoala is one of the players listed to receive national honours on Monday in Abuja.
The AWC, which is in its ninth edition, has been scheduled to hold in Namibia from October 11 to 25.
The
striker, who is expected to make the 2014 AWC squad, said the Falcons
would aim to regain the title they lost two years ago in Equatorial
Guinea.
“We know the task ahead of us in Namibia is not going to
be easy but we are determined to win the cup and go back to the World
Cup in Canada as African champions,”Oshoala was quoted by the senior
national women’s football team media officer Gracious Akujobi as saying
on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Falcons coach Edwin Okon said on Sunday
that the 21 players that will represent Nigeria at the AWC would be
released on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the
Confederation of African Football has given September 30 as the deadline
for teams to submit their final lists for the AWC.
NAN reports that 30 players were invited to the Falcons camp on September 14, but only 23 players are currently in camp.
Nigeria will open their campaign against Ivory Coast on October 11 and face Zambia three days later.
The Falcons will end their Group A battles with host Namibia on October 17.
